First mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, this 15th century Barn has passed through the hands of illustrious owners including King Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, and Anne of Cleves.
The focus of the renovation has been to sensitively restore the Medieval oak frame of the Barn using local materials and working with the finest craftsmen.
The barn originally had a thatched roof, made of Water Reed from the nearby river Arun. Hence the modern tiles where removed and local water reed, used to reinstate the thatched roof of the Barn using techniques that have remained unchanged for generations.
The stone plinth, 1m deep in places was repointed with lime and restored using locally quarried Greensand stone. The ancient timber frame walls insulated with natural organic insulation, lime plasters and clay paints.
The Medieval Barn fuses heritage and tradition with modernity and reinstates this beautiful building to its rightful place at the heart of this West Sussex Estate.
