Woodsden Oast House

Project type

Residential, Heritage

Date

2018

Location

Hawkhurst

Woodsden Oast involves the remodelling and extension of a late 19th Century twin square kiln oast house in Hawkhurst, Kent. The extension has been designed to reference the twin square kilns of the oast by creating an abstract interpretation of the forms. Under one of the new kilns will sit a large double height dining space with glazing overhead flooding the space with natural light. The dining space is joined by a glazed link to the existing kitchen within the main oast. The other form contains two new floors of accommodation with office space, utility space, storage and bathrooms.

A new cantilevered canopy has been designed to link the extension and oast to create a new covered entrance canopy. The new extension is fully clad in blackened seamed zinc to reference the tones of the black stained timber on the main barn section of the existing building. Planning approval was granted in 2018.
